PARENTS should use birth control measures to have children they can educate, the state minister for primary health care has advised.

Daniel Edyegu reports that Dr. Emmanuel Otaala discouraged traditional practices like having many children. “Plan your family and bear children you are able to educate. Education is the best investment a parent can have. If you only think of producing children without considering your ability to educate them, then we shall be conquered.”

Otaala was last week speaking at the graduation party for the Mbale resident state attorney, Jacob Oboth, at Nabiyoga sub-county in Tororo district.

Oboth graduated with a Masters of Law from the University of Minnesota in the US.

Otaala observed that while the Government does not have a policy on the number of children each parent must bear, child spacing was an alternative for better planning.

“The Government believes in a large population but this must not be at the expense of development. Spacing helps in planning for the education of your children and saves the women from developing health problems.”

He said education was a sacrifice that requires endurance by parents.

Otaala also advised children to respect their parents and work hard at school so as to motivate them to look for fees.

In attendance were the Jopadhola paramount chief, Kwar Adhola Moses Owor, the former Tororo MP, Apollo Ofwono and the Tororo district chairman, Emmanuel Osuna.
