EDITOR—As a Ugandan who worked in Darfur for two years, I was proud to see Uganda Police officers operating under very difficult circumstances and mandate as part of the AU force. I am equally delighted by the gallant performance of the UPDF in Liberia and now in Somalia. The President and Parliament deserve credit.

All Ugandans should face it. if it was not for the support of the Tanzanian army, probably we would have suffered for a long time under the merciless forces of Idi Amin. We therefore have an important contribution to make in peacekeeping operations not only in Africa but in other parts of the world.

However, I am greatly disappointed with other leaders in Africa. they have not condemned the human rights abuses perpetrated by the government of Sudan. Countries that had pledged troops for Somalia have chickened out.

I doubt that without superior western military support and air power the purely African force will deliver peace.
