JINJA - Residents of Buwenge recently slashed overgrown grass, swept and cleaned the wards of Buwenge Health Centre IV. The centre, which handles over 100 patients everyday, had reportedly become a sanctuary for vermins. While addressing residents and medical staff, the mayor, Stephen Mwesigye, said he acted immediately after realising the situation had become life-threatening.

Sex trade on the rise
KABALE - Sex trade on the Kabale-Kisoro road is on the increase, putting the lives of many at a risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. While addressing the press recently, the executive director of National Guidance and Empowerment Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS, Maj Rubaramira Ruranga, said the organisation had partnered with the HIV/AIDS Integrated Model District Programme to sensitise residents on how to prevent HIV/AIDS.

More facilities for the west
MBARARA - The Government will spend $30m (sh52m) on rehabilitating and equipping seven hospitals and healthcentres in south-western Uganda. While touring Igara East Healthcentre IV recently, the state minister for health, Dr Richard Nduhura, said 13 health centre IVs and 26 health centre IIIs would be up-graded and equipped with more facilities. The districts to benefit are Mbarara, Ntungamo, Bushenyi, Kanungu, Rukungiri, and Kabale.

500 children immunised
KAMPALA - Tata (U) limited and St. Francis hospital Nsambya, have immunised 500 children to mark celebrations of safe injections. The exercise took place at the hospital recently. Caesar Tokoma, the minister of health in Kampala City council (KCC), said KCC would work with any company that strived to prevent diseases among children. “Prevention of avoidable diseases is one of our top priorities and we should strive to eradicate diseases that are a source of mortality to our children,” Tokoma added.
