KAMPALA - Enrolment for Universal Primary Education (UPE) has increased by 238,951 pupils this academic year bringing the number to 7,463,712 pupils from 7,224, 761. The education minister, Geraldine Bitamazire, said this recently while responding to MPs’ concerns on the enrolment of pupils in universal primary education. She was also appearing before the committee to defend her ministry’s policy statement the for 2007/08 the financial year. Of these, 6,717,341 are in government-aided schools and 746,371, private schools. Bitamazire said 442,979 pupils were registered by the Uganda National Examinations Board to sit for their Primary Living Examinations this year.

IGG probes 22 teachers
Bugiri - Twenty-two headteachers in the district are being investigated by the inspector general of government for allegedly using fake academic papers. Speaking during a workshop for headteachers at Hindocha primary school recently, the district inspector of schools, Kawo Nayi, threatened to take immediate action against them if found guilty of the offence.
“Let the community own the affairs of these schools because tomorrow, these children will belong to the community,” he said. The workshop was organised by uphold in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development.

Teachers warned
GULU - The district will toughen on teachers who do not commence teaching in the first week of the term. The warning was sounded by the district chairman, Norbert Mao, during a talkshow on Mega Fm recently. He said that contributed to the poor performance in Primary Leaving Examinations results in most schools. Mao urged parents to make sure that their children reported to school on the first day of the term. He said it was the parents’ responsibilty to make sure that their children study. “It is only through education that we shall develop our areas,” he added.
