KAKUNGULU Cup holders Express will return to the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Express, which pulled out of the same cup due to financial constraints last year, yesterday announced its return to the event.
But the football governing body FUFA has given the Red Eagles up to October 15 to confirm their participation or they forfeit the slot.

A club that wins Uganda’s second most prestigious Kakungulu Cup participates in the Africa Confederation Cup. Express beat KCC 4-2 on penalties in the cup final August 10 at Nakivubo.

FUFA chief executive officer Charles Masembe yesterday said that league champions URA had confirmed for the Champions League whereas Express had just done so verbally.

“Team manager Kateregga (Muhamood) verbally confirmed Express’ participation a month ago. I asked him to present a formal communication which they are yet to deliver,” explained Masembe.

He said if Express failed to confirm by October 15, FUFA would invoke a CAF rule that empowers national associations to replace clubs that fail to fulfill the requirements.

But Express officials do not seem to see that urgency. Kateregga earlier admitted there was a communication breakdown in the club, but said they would take part in the cup.

“We are going to formalise our confirmation and also pay the required $300 by next week. We will represent the country.”

“FUFA is aware that we will participate next year. We have set up a management team to draw a budget. We have put in place a proper working system to raise money,” another official, Kavuma Kabenge, said after a press conference at Wankulukuku stadium that is being refurbished.

The club intends to have an all-sitter home by 2011.

Former Sadolin Power basketball team manager Peter Mubanda has been appointed general manager of the club. Kateregga will be assisted by Fred Tamale as team manager while Patrick Ntege is the programmes officer.

Kabenge appealed to fans to buy seasonal tickets ahead of the Super League kicks off on October 20.

Tickets are in the sh1m, sh0.5m, sh0.25m and sh30,000 ranges. Fans will also buy shares in Express.

Express that recruited Cranes assistant coach Polly Ouma take on KCC in the Independence Cup.
