AUTHORITIES of the Buganda Kingdom yesterday closed down the Buganda Royal Institute for Business and Technical Education following a two-day strike by students.

A notice, announcing the closure of the institute and signed by the acting katikkiro, Emmanuel Ssendaula, was displayed at the school gate yesterday.

The students went on strike on Monday and chased away students of the Mutesa I Royal University who had reported for the new academic year.

They stormed Bulange (seat of the Buganda government) and they demanded for the dismissal of the katikkiro and other officials.

They also jeered and insulted the katikkiro when he tried to address them over the strike on Tuesday.

The regional Police commander, Kampala Extra, Edward Ochom, deployed over 100 heavily armed policemen at the institute.

The Police ordered Leticia Nakimuli, the principal of the institute, and other administrators to hand over keys to their offices, and leave their houses.

The university students were told to report back on Monday.
New students of the institute were advised to return after two weeks.
