THE people of Teso should vote more wisely in future if they are to get more ministerial appointments, the President has advised.

“I propose that in order to give company to Musa Ecweru, next time things should be very simple. Push up the percentage of vote support from 20% to about 60-70% and things will be very easy,” Museveni told Teso district leaders during a consultative meeting held at Soroti Hotel recently. Ecweru is the disaster preparedness state minister and the only minister from the Teso region.

The leaders had in a memorandum read by the Katakwi LC5 chairman, Robert Ekongot, told the President that Ecweru was ‘lonely’. They asked the President to forgive the region for any political wrongdoing and assign it more ministers.
“People say you have many rooms in your office. However, look at Ecweru, he is lonely,” Ekongot said.

The President said he faced difficulties in appointing ministers from the districts where he got very few votes.
“It is a practical and political problem when it comes to rewarding areas where you get 97% of the votes and those where you only get 20%,” Museveni said.

“If you appoint ministers from the areas where you got only 20% and leave out areas where you got 97% support, the 97% will get annoyed,” Museveni said.
The President added that he had to consider other interests like gender when drawing up the cabinet.

Museveni also told the leaders that he had requested the Chinese government to construct a fruit processing plant in Soroti to absorb the citrus fruits grown widely under the NAADS programme.

“Even if the Chinese failed, the Government would construct the plant and privatise it later,” Museveni added.
He disclosed that sh16b had been set aside in the 2007/08 budget for the extension of electricity to Kaberamaido.

The people of Teso, the President advised, should utilise the available government programmes to improve their household incomes.

“The money is there. Use it to change your lifestyle at home,” Museveni told the leaders.

The Teso leaders thanked the Government for the prevailing security and its aid to victims of the recent floods.
