HIGH-FLYING Caxton Kalule finally ran into a rock solid opposition that effectively halted his Olympiad Chess qualifier fairytale at Lugogo on Independence Day.

Kalule, who led the first two phases of the qualifier, lost to former Olympians Moses Kawuma and Kenneth Kakooza to drop to third position.

Kakooza, who represented Uganda at the 1998 Olympiad in Russia, dug deep into his vast experience to tame Kalule in the ninth round using very aggressive opening moves. Kakooza check-mated Kalule in a record 12 moves. Kalule also went on to lose to Hassan Mulambe in the 10th round.

Kakooza and Kawuma jointly lead the standings with 7 points apiece. Mulambe and Bob Bibasa moved to fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Other seasoned players who suffered upsets in the previous rounds surged into the top 10 and retain chances of making it to the final phase.

The top 12 players will make it to the final phase from which a team of five that will present Uganda at the World Chess Olympiad in Germany next year will be picked.
