WITH family and friends increasingly settling abroad, it is common for people to feel nostalgic. Seeing a photo of a loved one often makes it easier. With Internet, it is even easier, more so when using a webcam.

A webcam is a device used for Internet chatting and video conferencing if they have a webcam or appropriate software. If you mount it on your computer, the person you are chatting with will see you.

Shital Shah of Seven Seas Computers and Services on Kampala Road, says: “it is a way of making friends; interacting with family members and knowing how your business partners look like.

Besides, it also helps one conduct interviews at a distance. So when one is cheating, he or she will be seen.”
“All computers connected to the Internet can use it.

Their price depends on the number of pixels. the higher the pixels, the more expensive the camera. The more expensive it is, the better the quality; at least 99% of high-priced ones are good,” Shah adds.

Ashok Basivireddi of Computer & Appliance Garden Limited on Bombo Road says: “We have the light wave type. Apart from face-to-face interactions, it can be used to capture pictures used for the net.”

Rogers Turigye, a technician at Genex Computers on Kampala Road, says webcams come with a software; you connect it to the computer and install the software, which gives different options. Most of those in the market now use USB ports.

He says just like any other electronics, webcams come in different shapes. Some are attached to the computer screens. These are good for laptops and flat screen computers, while there are some meant to be placed on the desk beside your computer.

“They have brand names such as Genius, Creative, Epro and Intex. However take precaution when buying one, especially those that do not have the software since fake webcams are also on the market,” says Turigye.

Webcams are available in most computer accessories shops in town.
