ABOUT 60% of the school-going children drop out of school in both primary and secondary levels in Sembabule district, the resident district commissioner, Kabogorwa Serwano, has said.

ABOUT 60% of the school-going children drop out of school in both primary and secondary levels in Sembabule district, the resident district commissioner, Kabogorwa Serwano, has said.
He also noted that 60% of teachers in the district were unqualified and that the qualified teachers posted to the district opt for other districts.
“The qualified teachers consider the distance from water sources and the living conditions in the district. That is why people with fake academic papers are teaching our children,†noted Kabogorwa.
He was addressing officials from the Education and Sports Performance Review team who visited the district on Monday.
Kabogorwa attributed the increasing drop-out rates to the drought that hits the district annually, making the children resort to fetching water for their families’ livestock.
The team, led by John Bosco Ssemakula, was in the district to assess the revised school timetables, progress made through the use of local languages with the introduction of the thematic curriculum and tofind out why several children were not completing their primary education.
The officials also visited Kiboga district.Headteachers appealed for more classrooms, teachers’ houses, especially in the seed secondary schools and recruitment of more teachers on the Government payroll.
“The teachers who are posted to our school find problems in getting water and accommodation, making them walk long distances that is why they have always asked for transfers ,†Said Evelyn Namatovu the head mistress of Matete seed Secondary School.
However Rose Byaruhanga the Principal of Rutuku Polytechnic Training Institute asked for extension of power to the institute and provisions for new stance toilets.
“Last year we saved about sh1m anticipating that Government would help us top up and secure a solar panel, we are still waiting for their intervention,†said Byaruhanga. Ends…/
