THE Ministry of Tourism has started the final inspection of hotels, bars, restaurants and entertainment centres in the CHOGM zone.

The area includes Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso districts. “This is being done to ensure that all the facilities and hospitality services to be offered during the summit are of high standard,” Cuthbert Baguma, the assistant commissioner of registration and inspection of tourism facilities in the ministry, said on Monday.

The exercise focuses on the state of buildings, safety and security, staff professionalism and grooming and preventive measures against malaria.

The staff will also be medically examined, in addition to checking the maintenance and repair of electrical appliances in the rooms.
The inspectors will also look at the power supply reliability and the general hygiene of the facilities.

Baguma said no facility would be closed due to failure to meet the required standards.

“Our responsibility is to advise guests on where to go depending on our inspections. In a private-public partnership promotion, it is not proper to close down a facility.”

Last year, the ministry announced that hotels would be graded every after two years to ensure that high standards are maintained even after the summit.
