THE Ugandan-Banyarwanda Development Association has said the pastoralist crisis has been politicised especially in Buganda, Bunyoro, Teso and Lango regions, writes Mary Karugaba.

Appearing before the parliamentary select committee on pastoralists on Wednesday, the group accused the area politicians of fuelling the conflict in order to get votes.

“The crisis has acquired a genocide tone. The politicians are arming the locals against us. They have killed our people and cattle. Our lives are at risk,” Dr. Ephraim Kamuhangire, the group’s spokesperson said.

“We are law abiding people willing to co-exist with our fellow countrymen. We are humans and not villains as they portray us,” read the memorandum the team presented to the MPs.

The group added that they are discriminated against and the females are harassed when they seek passports at the immigration department.

The committee, chaired by Sam Njuba (FDC, Kyaddondo East) heard that although the Ugandan-Banyarwanda had complained to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ruhakana Rugunda, about the discrimination, nothing had been done to solve the problem.

Emma Boona (Mbarara) criticised some MPs from Buganda for fuelling the conflict.
