PRIVATE education institutions have asked for tax waivers, writes Vision Reporter.

“We implore the Government to waive corporation tax on private tertiary institutions and reduce the impact of import duty and Value Added Tax on scholastic materials and education inputs,” Aloysius Ssemanda, the chairman of Multitech Business School, said.

“According to the National Council for Higher Education, the fees levied by universities and other tertiary institutions do not cover the full cost of delivering education,” he said at the first graduation of the school, where 650 students got diplomas and other professional qualifications.

“The Government has been instrumental in perpetuating this situation by vetoing the proposal by public universities to review their fees upwards,” Ssemanda said, adding that private institutions cannot increase fees before public institutions do so.

He said because of their small market size, private institutions end up being price-takers.
