Help students develop talents

EVERY student has talent. This is what we call a ‘hobby”. It is mainly an activity that they engage in with ease because they love to do it.

Enhancing talents in students is vital since many students detest school because it seems to be unexciting.

Concentrating on academics full time can put a great demand on a student if not complemented with enhancement of their talents.

Many students who do not attain excellent grades tend to feel that they can never be successful in life. While those who excel concentrate on academics and often neglect the co-curricular activities.

However, we can’t ignore the small percentage who attain considerable advantage in both spheres. What can the teacher do to help?

l Provide students with opportunities to pursue their talents. There are obvious talents like, singing and sports, but also less obvious ones like writing.

Institute various clubs where students can be free to take on different roles, make use of co-curricular activities, field trips, and community work.

l Recognise and praise them genuinely for their effort.

This is necessary whether the student does it satisfactorily or not. Even those who dare to try need to be recognised. It takes courage to try. It is from those mini- applauses that a student can rise to greater heights.

What prevents most of our students from trying is that they are surrounded by negativity. The teacher needs to help the student look at themselves differently.

l Avoid the tendence to compare students. It is important to celebrate individual talent.
