THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has seized fake sweets at Trans Merchant Ltd in Kikuubo, a city business hub.

The UNBS officials and the Police on Thursday also searched a residence in Bukoto, near Ntinda of other suspected fake products but found none.

Daniel Atugonza, the head of surveillance section, said they were tipped off about a Kikuubo trader who allegedly duplicates fast-moving products on the market.

He said the seized products did not indicate country of origin, while ingredients on the packaging materials were not those inside. “The public should watch out on counterfeit goods that are dominating the market especially during this festive season.

“We are still monitoring the culprits,” said Atugonza.

He explained that they had discovered that counterfeit goods were normally kept in the suspects’ homes from where they are distributed to different outlets in small vans on wholesale basis.
“This is becoming a national concern that needs to be addressed in a more sensitive way.

“There are unscrupulous businessespeople targeting any fast-moving items on market then duplicate them either locally or from abroad,” he said.
