FIVE Police officers are detained in Sironko district following a Monday morning escape in which 16 suspects fled Sironko Police Station.

According to Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba, the escapees, held over robbery and defilement, left the cells under unclear circumstances at about 1:00am.

“Investigations into the circumstances under which they left the station are underway,” she told the press at Kampala Central Police Station.
The officers will face charges of aiding the detainees to escape, Nabakooba said.

The Police in Sironko yesterday began hunting for the escapees.

Five of them were under investigation over robbery, seven were accused of theft, one was in custody over defilement, two were held over assault while another one had been detained over threatening violence.

Briefing the press about crime incidents in the past days, Nabakooba said a 21-year-old woman was strangled in Kampala by unknown assailants as she returned home yesterday morning.

Florence Kyomuhendo met her killers at Bwaise, a Kampala suburb, moments after she left Eden Service Park, an entertainment centre. Her body was naked.

A private security guard, who was guarding a nearby school, was arrested in connection with her death.
“He was guarding in the vicinity, yet he says he did not hear the alarm the girl made.”

Two girls have been killed in Kawempe Division, Kampala in a similar way over the last two months.
