Busitema University gets chancellor

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has appointed Prof. Francis Gervas Omaswa the chancellor of Busitema University in Busia district.

Omaswa has confirmed Prof. Mary Jossy Nakandha Okwakol as vice-chancellor of the public university that exclusively offers science programmes.

The development was announced by the university secretary, Maurice Muhwezi, in a a press release issued on Thursday.

Omaswa has a degree in Surgery and Human Medicine from the then East African University Makerere (now Makerere University).

He is a professor of surgery and the director of the Uganda Heart Institute.
Omaswa has been chief surgeon and head of the quality assurance programme in the health ministry.

At international level, Omaswa has served as chairperson of the Global stop TB partnership, the transitional working group and board of the Global Fund.

Okwakol is the first woman in the country to hold the office of vice-chancellor of a public university.
She holds a doctorate in zoology from Makerere university and has 36 years of experience of working with universities at various capacities.

Prior to her confirmation, Okwakol served as deputy vice-chancellor Gulu University.

Busitema University was established in 2007 by an Act of Parliament.
