Namutumba district council has cut down councillors’ allowances for the next financial year by half. The councillors, who have been getting sh200,000 per sitting, will now take home sh100,000 with effect from next month.

Presenting the budget to the council on Friday, the finance and planning secretary, Betty Onyango, explained that the move follows a shortfall of revenue collection. She said only 23m of the expected sh35m was realised.

She said the number of councillors had increased following the election of four councillors for people with disabilities and women recently.

The vice-chairman, Musirimu Butootoba Mugoya, urged the councillors to support the district programmes.

He reminded them that their term of office ends soon.
