When I reached Choma, I sighted her seated alone and suspected she was my date. However, I did not want to take chances, so I decided to sit somewhere else. Later I was directed to her table. I apologised for arriving late.
All was well until she told me about her one-and-half-year-old daughter.

I was upset but tried to play it cool. She asked: “Are you scared?” And I said no. She said, “Men often fear responsibilities that are not theirs.”
I asked her where the girl’s father was but she told me it was a private issue.
“Are you ready for a new relationship?” I asked. “As long as you’re ready to love me with my daughter,” she said.

She, however, seemed more interested in the soap showing on the TV than talking to me. At one time she asked me to feel free to leave if I was tired because she would only leave after the soap ended. I offered to wait for her and luckily, the soap ended in a few minutes. We exchanged contacts and left.

What did you find striking about her?
Her honesty; not many people can reveal about their children on the first date.

Anything that rubbed you the wrong way?
She expected me to commit myself to a relationship immediately.

Any future plans?
We can only be good friends. I am not interested in a woman with a child.

After the initial pleasantries, we got to know each other’s age but I was disappointed that he is not as old as I wanted.

When I expressed my disappointment, he said, “You may get somebody older than I but without the qualities you want.”

He then offered to initiate a serious relationship if it was okay with me. I told him Hoima, where he is based, is far and so we could begin by meeting in Kampala. I offered to visit him later after we have known each other well. However, I have my reservations because young men do not usually take relationships seriously.

What were his strengths?
He is confident and showed interest.
And the weaknesses?
He was not open; he kept dodging most of my questions by changing the topic every time I asked him something sensitive.

Do you have any hope that things will work out?
I highly doubt because the distance between Kampala and Hoima is really long.
