AFRICAN Champions Egypt have denied allegations that the recent robbery at the team’s hotel had anything to do with some of their players falling foul of light-fingered female consorts at the team’s victory party.

Last Friday, members of the Egyptian team claimed to have lost $2,400 in cash after ‘thieves broke’ into their hotel rooms.

“We have reason to believe that they brought women onto the premises and were celebrating with them,” a policeman told the media.

However, the chairman of the Egyptian football federation was not amused.

“I think that they said that to divert attention from the main issue,” said Samir Zahir.

“Santana not worth it”
Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana, who earns R1.8m a month, is perceived as a ‘waste of money’ despite helping the hosts to a semi-final slot on Saturday.

The Brazilian’s defensive game has come under fire from former Bafana Bafana greats, the fans and the media.

Even fellow Brazilians know him as a coach determined to prevent the opposition from scoring. In the process he has sidelined players such as Katlego Mashego and Richard Henyekane.

Gordon Igesund, South Africa’s only coach to win the league with four different teams, said: “Mashego is a good player.

He is a better player than Thembinkosi Fanteni, who never gets into the areas that Mashego finds himself.”

I miss Andre Iniesta, says Xavi
Ordinarily, the opportunity of edging closer to their first Confederations Cup title would trigger happiness among all Spanish team players, but not even being named ‘man of the match’ could animate Xavi Hernandez.

What could be the problem? “I miss Iniesta. I have got to work so hard in his absence. I am happy with the records we are setting (15-match winning run) and the performances so far but I am so used to playing with Iniesta that I feel something is missing,” Xavi told The New Vision.

Iniesta was ruled out of the tournament after rupturing a thigh muscle before the Champions League final against Manchester United.

The two players’ chemistry came through Barcelona’s famous school of Excellence.

“All we do on the pitch is put into practice what we learnt in La Masia,” says Xavi. He started training with Barcelona aged 10. Iniesta was spotted aged 12 and both have been playing one-touch pass and move football in a 4-3-3 formation since they were old enough to play 11-a-side. “He is the best team-mate I can have and the best footballer Spain has by a long distance because he can do things that other players can’t do” Xavi added.
