Kamuli leaders have been called upon to safeguard the rights of widows and orphans living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

Former ethics state minister Miria Matembe warned relatives against depriving widows and orphans of family property, saying they were entitled to inheritance.

The appeal follows reports of rampant violation of widows and orphans’ rights in Kamuli district.

Matembe advised Kamuli residents to avoid producing too many children.

She was on Thursday speaking at the launch of a study on the role of cultural leaders in promoting the rights of widows and orphans affected by HIV/AIDS at Kamuli Youth Centre.

The study was carried out by Plan Uganda in conjunction with the women’s legal aid, FIDA and the Cross Cultural Foundation of Uganda.

The study, which was done in 2007/2008, is meant to enhance positive living.

Plan Uganda HIV/AIDS legal rights coordinator Barbara Babweteera said the study targeted cultural leaders because they are opinion leaders.

The LC5 chairman, Stephen Mubiru, warned leaders against stealing relief items meant for persons living with HIV/AIDS.
