Waste policy needed

A waste management and environmental expert, Banada Nswa, has advised the Government to develop a policy on waste management. Banada said plastic bags make up only 2% of the waste and so even if the country got rid of plastics, other types of solid waste would remain. “We need a policy that will clarify on the mandate of the different institutions that need to participate to provide a solution,” Banada said.

President for meeting
PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni is to attend a special session of the UN to discuss climate change. “The President is one of the leaders expected to address the UN climate change meeting in the US this September,” Winnie Masiko, the chairperson of the natural resources committee, said recently during the launch of a rclimate change report.

EU launches guidelines
A European Union-funded programme has set up tree-planting guidelines to
be used as a resource to promote commercial tree plantations. According
to the EU ambassador, Vincent De Visscher, the guidelines were formulated
with funding from the Sawlog Production Scheme. The guidelines will help tree farmers to tend their trees better. The advice is contained in a booklet titled: “Tree Planting Guidelines for Uganda” which costs sh40,000.

Mutagamba to meet investors
THE environment minister, Maria Mutagamba, is to meet plastic bagmanufacturers concerning the total ban of plastic bags. “The ban stands, but I will be meeting the plastic bag investors this week,” Mutagamba told The New Vision. She says she is not opposed to the ban but she has been meeting the investors to discuss the matter.
