NAKAWA division has lost about sh120m in unremitted dues from Nakawa Market in the past six months, Protazio Kintu, the LC 3 chairman, has said. The market has been handed over to Kampala City Council (KCC) authorities, who will collect revenue and maintain it.

Addressing executive committee members of the Nakawa Market Vendors Association (NMVA) and the Nakawa Market Vendors Limited (NMVL) at the Nakawa Community Hall on Monday, Kintu said the division decided to hand over the market to KCC because NMVA had failed to remit market dues since January.

Kintu said the association had been collecting revenue from vendors, but was not remitting it to KCC. He, however, said the arrangement was temporary. For long, the two associations have been wrangling over who should collect market dues, with each claiming to be the rightful tenderer.

Kintu also said NMVA had been issuing the division with bad cheques for the last six months. “We cannot continue losing revenue. Collecting funds and failing to remitting it to KCC is wrong.”

The meeting was attended by the Nakawa deputy resident district commissioner, Fred Bamwine, and councilors.
