Mallinga sees light
If the statements of health minister Stephen Mallinga are anything to go by, then the minister has undergone a massive transformation. He says he has turned his life around and quit sinful habits like drinking and many others. Addressing a press conference recently at the media centre, an upbeat Mallinga emphasised certain issues and at one point repeatedly inquired whether the Red Pepper was present. Reason? The paper was fond of writing immaterial things about him. “They like writing that I smoke and drink. I have never smoked and I have since stopped drinking,” he said. For emphasis, he translated his statement into Luganda. He said he had quit life in the first lane and had offered his life to Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord!

Tarsis apologises
Disaster preparedness minister Tarsis Kabwegyere knows when to apologise. The minister, who has lately been in the news over his comments about the famine-stricken areas in the country, apologised to the MPs of the affected areas on behalf of the Government. He had said that there was famine in Teso because the Iteso are drunkards. This was his apology: “On behalf of Government and of my ministry, I apologise,” he said during a radio talk-show. He added: “But you cannot say that the Iteso don’t drink and this and that.” The apology seems to have worked miracles.

Skilled Opolot
Media Centre boss Fred Opolot seems to have already benefited from his brief stay at the helm of the centre. He seems to have been equipped with extra skills in dealing with difficult situations.
Faced with one explosive incident last week, where the convener failed to turn up and with journalists losing their cool, Opolot coolly walked in and calmly explained why the press conference would not take off. He then apologised. His manner disarmed even the most furious who instead asked him to brief them on the latest news on Migingo Island.

Museveni’s advice
President Museveni has advice for parents who do not pack lunch for their UPE children. Addressing residents of Maanyi village in Mityana district on Tuesday, Museveni said that even he, the head of state, is not ashamed to carry packed lunch whenever he goes upcountry. “Now I cannot understand why you don’t want to pack lunch for your kids. I carry my coffee and food in my flask, that is why I do not disturb you asking for lunch when I visit you here. My daughter just unpacks, and gives me my food,” he said.
