THREE women, one Ugandan and two Congolese, were shot in Buguma market in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), about 15km from the Ugandan border. Joyce Bujune from Rwebisengo, Bundibugyo district, Norah Celestin and another woman whose identity was not readily established, were shot on Sunday when the Ngiti, a rebel militia, clashed with the DRC government forces.

The injured women were taken to Buhinga hospital in Fort Portal and Rwebisengo hospital in Bundibugyo district. Bujune was shot in the chest, while Celestin was hit in the hip.

She narrated that they were shot when the Ngiti attacked a nearby army detachment, forcing the soldiers to flee into the market to hide among the civilians.

“The militia attacked when I was in the market. I was trying to run away when a bullet hit me,” Bujune said as she displayed her injuries at Buhinga Hospital.

The western regional Police commander, Wilson Kwanya, said the militia shot at the fleeing soldiers, causing a stampede in the market. He explained that they could not easily determine the number of Ugandans injured because the clash happened inside the DRC.
