KYAMBOGO Warriors coach Gad Etau will look to build his team’s FIBA Africa Zone V challenge around a solid defence, believing it will provide the catalyst for an equally effective attack.

The Warriors, who are one of three Uganda’s representatives alongside D’Mark Power and the Falcons, open their campaign against Tanzania’s JKT at Makerere today. Etau believes success for the Warriors in the event will hinge on how well they play without the ball.

He said: “I think we will rely on our defence because in such a tournament every possession counts.”

Etau will have available team skipper Brian Gumisiriza and Joshua Etalu, who were injury doubts. He says they will be used sparingly because they are not “100% fit”.

The Falcons and Power also face off with Kenya champions KCB and Coop respectively in encounters that are sure to test the Ugandan sides.

Falcons star-centre Henry Malinga said: “I expect a tough game but that is what we thrive on”. His Power counterpart David Kiberu stressed that his team would have to “triple their efforts” because they don’t know how their opponents play but insisted the national champions will “play their game”.

Also, Uganda’s female representatives KCC Leopards, KIU Rangers and A1 Challenge take on Rwanda’s UNR, Burundi’s Berco Stars and Kenya’s Eagle Wings respectively.
