WORLD 5000m bronze medallist Moses Kipsiro will captain the national team to the World Athletics Championships, but the party will be without Dorcus Inzikuru.

The team to the August 14-25 event in Berlin, Germany, that was confirmed yesterday has 12 athletes.

Former world champion, Inzikuru, will have to wait another two years before she attempts to regain the world 3000m steeplechase title she won at the 2005 Helsinki championships.

Inzikuru, who skipped the last championship event in Osaka, Japan, as she was expecting her baby, failed to make the qualifying mark when she did not finish in the Barcelona 3000mSC last month. Her absence leaves marathoner Jane Suuto as Uganda’s only female representative on the team that has four marathoners.

National athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru yesterday said that Kipsiro, who is also a silver medallist in the men cross country championships, has all the qualities of a captain and will help in organising the team.

“But we should also remember that it is athletics and it’s basically an individual sport. Other members, especially those whose competitions will be starting late, will also report late for the event,” said Ayikoru

“We will for the fist time enter a team to challenge the men World Marathon Cup,” added Ayikoru on confirmation of the final list. This was after marathon runner Nicholas Kiprono opted to join the team after he had earlier showed lack of interest.

Uganda has managed to finish at the medal podium in the past two events, after Inzikuru’s gold in Helsinki and Kipsiro’s bronze in Osaka 2007. Kipsiro is also a current silver medallist in the World Cross Country.

The first batch of the contigent flies out on August 13, while the officials on the team will be named today..

The full team:
Suuto, Simon Ruguti, Kiprono and Amos Masai (marathon); Simon Ayeko and Benjamin Kiplagat (3000mSC), Boniface Kiprop and Martin Toroitich (10000m). Others are Moses Kibet, Geoffrey Kusuro and Kipsiro (5000m), and Abraham Chekirwok (800m).
