Eight sub-counties in Kitgum and Pader districts have received sh1.4b to promote small business. The Norwegian government donated the money through the livelihood and economic recovery of northern Uganda Project so as to improve household income in the two districts.

According to the Food-for-the-Hungry programme director, Pius Okello Ongom, the Norwegian government wants to financially empower the returning internally displaced persons in Padibe East, Padibe West, Mucwini, Palabek Gem and Namokora sub-counties.

He said the donation targeted 4,500 beneficiaries. “The money will be disbursed by the savings and credit cooperatives to promote the community saving and lending mechanisms for investment,” Okello said on Friday.

He noted that sh624m had been earmarked to support various income generating activities, adding that each group would receive sh6m for one year.

Okello said under cash-for-work in Pader district, sh787m would be given to 81 groups to open up 90km of community roads in the sub-counties of Pajule, Laguti and Patongo.

“We expect that each person will get at least sh390,000 at the end of the one-year pilot project. We are mobilising and encouraging these groups to organise themselves into savings and credit associations,” Okello said.

Some of the income generating activities done in Kitgum district include art designing, goat rearing, piggery, ox-plough cultivation, simsim production, grinding mill, bee keeping and poultry keeping.

Okello advised the savings and credit cooperatives not to discriminate against disabled persons, persons living with HIV/AIDS, female-headed families and child-headed households when approving loans.
