A sh9.7m winner’s cash prize brought the best out of Ugandan golf ace Deo Akope, destroying the Nyali course in Mombasa to lead the KCB Pro-arm yesterday.

Akope defied windy conditions, firing a course record equaling five under par 66 to seize a commanding lead on day one of the four-day tournament whose winner will take home Ksh360,000 (Ush9.7m).

Akope stunned a star-studded home field, with birdies on holes 1, 5, 7 and 8, and maintained the rich vein of form on the back nine with birdies on 13, 14, 17 and 18.

The Uganda Professional Golfers Association captain carries a five-stroke cushion in the second round today.

“I will keep my cool, I won’t try too hard. I know everybody will be out to take me on but I won’t be bothered. It was windy as usual and the low shots did it for me,” Akope commented.
Kenyans Kopan Timbe and Richard Ainley tied in second position at 71.

Ugandans Denis Anguyo (73), Brian Toolit (74), Godfrey Mande (76), Amos Kamya (83) and Herman Mutaawe (84) were 10th, 11th, 20th, 39th and 40th respectively.
