THE Court of Appeal has released two directors of a local NGO, Valued Health Ltd, who were convicted of embezzling sh38m from the Global Fund.

Annaliza Mondon and Elizabeth Ngororano were on Friday granted bail and ordered to pay sh9m each.

They were also ordered to surrender their passports and report to the court every fortnight at 10:00am, starting on August 28.

Their sureties, David Nyakairu, Dr. Anatori Kamari, Canon Justus Byagagaire, David Twahirwa, and Joy Twahirwa, were ordered to pay a bond of sh10m cash.

Justice Steven Kavuma also ordered that the forced recovery of sh38m from the convicts be stayed until their appeal against the five-year jail sentence is determined by the court. The date for hearing the appeal is yet to be fixed.

Mondon and Ngororano were sentenced on July 14 for embezzling sh38,369,000 million from the Global Fund.

Justice John Bosco Katutsi convicted the two directors and ordered them to refund the money.

In their application for bail, the two maintained their innocence. Mondon, 35, said she was a single parent with three children who needed her close care.

She also argued that she had never absconded since she was charged in March.

Ngororano, 65, said she was of advanced age and would abide by the bail terms.

Deo Nzeyimana, the deputy registrar of Court of Appeal, delivered the ruling in a fully-packed chamber.

Outside court, the two were hugged by their relatives and friends. Among them was Teddy Seezi Cheeye, who was sentenced to 10 years for embezzling sh110m of Global Fund money on April 8. He was released on bail earlier.
