I have just completed an international diploma in stores management and stock/inventory control at Cambridge International College, Britain. But a friend of mine told me that I have to first apply to the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) for them to equate and recognise my foreign qualification. Isn't Cambridge recognised?

MICHAEL, your friend is right. Before you can have your qualifications recognised here, you have to submit them to the NCHE for verification.

Arthur Muguzi, a NCHE officer, says as the body mandated by law to regulate higher education qualification standards, it is important for your qualifications to be equated to ascertain the authenticity of your grades.

Among other things, NCHE seeks to verify if the college you attended meets international standards and is, therefore, a recognised institution of higher education. They also seek to prove that you attended the course as you claim and that you truly obtained the qualification.

This is done in conjunction with the regulatory body in the country where you obtained your qualification. You have to go to the NCHE offices in Kyambogo University (within the campus) and fill an application form at a fee of about sh50,000 and along with this form, present your academic documents for consideration.

After consulting your college, the council verifies the information you will have submitted. Once the above has been verified and confirmed, the council will equate your grades to a comparative qualification obtainable in Uganda.

You need to pay close attention to this process because it determines your career. It determines whether or not you will get your dream job. It also determines whether or not you go for further studies.
