GOVERNMENT officials in Amolatar district have fled their work stations in fear of arrest by the anti-corruption Police squad. The district chairman, Alfred Adoli Ogwok, said the squad had sent a wave of panic among civil servants in Lango sub-region and most of them were hiding to evade arrest.

Adoli's statement came after top officials of Oyam, Apac and Lira districts were recently arrested by the anti-corruption squad, headed by the criminal investigation department chief, Edward Ochom.

“I have learnt that some officers have fled to either their home villages or are hiding in towns as far as Juba (Sudan) to avoid arrest,” Adoli said.

He added that he had written to the chief administration officer (CAO) to investigate the claims and take disciplinary action.

“If they know they are innocent, why run away? This is a clear indication that investigations into these offices should be launched,” Adoli said.

The Police recently arrested five officials in Lira over mismanagement of the national agricultural advisory services funds.

They include Dr. Bernard Otim, Richard Adoko, Francis Okello, Emmanuel Opila and CAO John Okolimo. They were remanded at Lira Prison.

In Apac district, 12 district officials, three police officers and two peasant farmers were also arrested after a non-governmental organisation, The Apac Anti-corruption Coalition (TAACC), reported the fraud cases to the Police. They were remanded at Apac Prison.

In Oyam, four officials were also arrested over inflating the number of teachers on the payroll.

"Some officials have been arrested under politically motivated circumstances to distabilise the opposition against challenging the ruling NRM government in the 2011 elections," Adoli added.
