UGANDA’S U-17 team, the Hippos, succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Zanzibar but managed to sail through to the quarterfinals of the ongoing CECAFA/Bashir Under-17 soccer tournament in Juba, as group B leaders on superior goal difference.

Uganda leads the group with six points, level with Zanzibar but ahead of the Islanders with an eight goal advantage.

Elsewhere, Tanzania confirmed their top rating in Group A when they soaked Somalia 2-0 at the Khartoum Stadium. The win placed the Serengeti Boys on top of the Group with maximum nine points and they face Ethiopia on Wednesday as the tournament reached the quarter finals.

The Ugandans were yet to know their quarterfinal opponents as the match between Sudan and Malawi that kicked off at 9:30 last night would determine who finishes second in Group A.

Coach Richard Wasswa blamed the loss on injuries to his striking pair of Dan Sserukuuma and Julius Sennoga. Sennoga pulled a muscle in the last training ahead of the game.

The team now relocates to Khartoum where they will play in the first quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Today is a rest day as teams from Juba and Medani venues shift for the rest of the championship to Khartoum.
