Study trips have become common during holidays. Trips which are authorised by the schools are a good idea because they help students acquire practical knowledge outside the classroom. However, some schools do not provide enough security for students.

The vehicles transporting students are normally in poor mechanical condition, overloaded and sometimes driven by inexperienced drivers. Many lives have been lost in the name of study tours.

Schools authorities must work with the Police and parents to ensure adequate preparation in terms of road safety and first aid measures.

They should also provide parents with specific written information about objectives of a trip, the costs and transportation arrangements, including departure time and time of return. This will also curb the cases of students duping their parents for pocket money.

TIPS FOR STUDENTS

- Avoid being lured into unsupervised parties. This may lead you into fornication and taking alcohol
- Always take a strong stand and say “no” to friends who force you to participate in activities
- Dress decently to avoid sexual abuse
- Desist from roaming about the streets aimlessly. You might be arrested for being idle and disorderly
- You can volunteer to do chores, for example helping the elderly, cleaning and slashing around churches and hospitals
- Visit decent cinema halls or theatres for educative plays or films and avoid bibanda.
