A MAIN sewer line at Nsambya has burst, pouring faecal material into the Nakivubo Water Channel that flows into Lake Victoria.

The leakage is at the point where the Uganda Railway line crosses the water channel between the Roko Construction Company city offices and Nsambya railway quarters.

According to the railway guards and residents, the sewage pipe has been open f
or over a week.

“This is the second time that pipe has burst and at almost the same spot. The first time the water people took almost a month to fix it. We do not know how long they will take this time,” said Stephen Owino, a resident of Nsambya.

A heavy stench hangs around the area and faeces are seen floating on top of the water channel.
The breakage also poses a health risk as some people use the channel water to wash vehicles and clothes.

The sewer line, according to Owino, serves Nsambya Hospital, the Police barracks, the railway quarters and residential houses on Nsambya hill.

The channel has been a conduit of several pollutants that eventually end in Lake Victoria.

Once there is too much faecal matter in the water, it consumes oxygen that could otherwise sustain aquatic life.
National Water and Sewerage Corporation spokesperson Miriam Kadaga said the corporation had dispatched a team of engineers to rectify the problem.
