Betty Bigombe, the former state minister for northern Uganda, has been appointed the board chairperson of the National Information Technology Authority - Uganda (NITA-U).

Bigombe and five others took oath before the ICT minister Aggrey Awori during their inauguration in Kampala recently.

The other members include Prof. Patrick Mangheni, Betty Kasimbazi, Kenneth Lubega, Kin Kaliisa and Ambrose Ruyooka.

Awori said the board’s term would last three years.

He warned them of the challenging task ahead.

The ministry’s biggest challenge to date remains the implementation of the National ICT Backbone project.

“You will be in charge of maintaining IT standards.

“We banned the importation of old computers and the public will come to you asking questions about such matters,” he said.

He added that the board was also expected to make sure cyber laws were put to good use.
