Katakwi district chairperson John Robert Ekongot clashed with the LC3 chairperson for Iriir sub-county in Moroto district, John Ogwel, over the disputed Katakwi-Moroto border.

Ogwel said to bring peace between the Karimojong and Iteso, the issue of boundaries should not arise. He said people should be left to settle and move wherever they wanted.

He said the Katakwi-Moroto border conflict should not be treated as a national problem but it should be left to the local people to decide.

“The Teso-Karamoja problems should be left to indigenous people to settle and not to the people of Kampala, after all, they do not educate the people here,” said Ogwel.

Ogwel was on Tuesday, giving his remarks at the closure of the two-day sports activities to promote peace between Moroto and Katakwi youth.

The function was held at Kapwat Primary School in Iriir sub-county. He appealed to the people from both regions to vote out leaders who promote politics which divide the people.

Ekongot fired back, saying: “The issue is not that there should be no border, the issue is about peace and co-existence. If we were good people, then the border problem would not be an issue.”

He said it was wrong for Ogwel to say the Iteso and the Karimojong problem can best be solved without talking about the border dispute.

He expressed concern that the Moroto district top leadership did not attend the function aimed at helping the youth from the two regions to co-exist peacefully.
