RESIDENTS of Nangabo in Wakiso district have resolved to sue Kampala City Council (KCC) over polluting their environment. This was in a letter dated August 31 to KCC, which cited environmental damage and health injuries as a result of dumping waste at the Lusajja-Kiteezi site.

The area, located 10 kilometers from Kampala City on Gayaza Road, has been a dumping ground since 1992. It is used by KCC, individuals and companies sanctioned to collect waste in the city.

Through Sam Njuba, a Kampala advocate, the residents of Kiteezi, Nangabo, Masooli and Wattuba are demanding compensation of about sh100b. They are also demanding a permanent injunction against KCC to stop dumping waste at the site, until measures are taken to protect them and the environment.

KCC’s actions are in violation of Article 39 of the Constitution on the right to a clean and healthy environment, the residents said. Ruth Kijjambu, KCC’s town clerk, said measures would be taken to respond to the litigation but she declined to comment further, arguing that she had not seen the letter from the residents.
