THE Indian Malayalees Community from Kerala state in India celebrated the traditional Onam day on Saturday. The day, which was celebrated by the Malayalees worldwide, is in memory of King Mahabali, their former state and religious leader.

The celebration was attended by over 140 Indian families in Uganda at Chako Babu’s residence on Gabula road in Jinja. The function started with the lighting of a traditional lamp called Nilavilakhe amidst chants and songs.

This was followed by dances, and serving of the 25 traditional dishes. The chairperson of World Malayalee Council (WMC) Africa, Chacko Babu, and the organising committee chairperson of the event, appealed to the members to unite and fight corruption and betrayal, things he said Mahabali fought against during his reign.

Ajith Prasad, the President of WMC, called upon Malayalees to work closely with other Indian communities in Uganda.
