I’VE driven past this green wall with the word “Joglo”, just at the junction before you turn down to the Northern Bypass, scores of times. My impression was that behind it lay, probably stockpiles of timber. So when I got a call to visit Joglo Restaurant and Bar, I naturally thought, “It’s a restaurant?”

Yes it is, and we were quite surprised to find it bustling with family parties, couples and just friends out for a Sunday sun downer.

It’s been made quite popular by the power of word of mouth. Apparently everyone who goes there is so enchanted that they have to tell their friends.

I know I tend to say positive things about the places I review, but that is because I don’t believe it’s my job to tell you about awful places, I believe it is my job to tell you about good ones, so don’t doubt my objectivity.

I warn you of this because I am going to lavish a lot of praise on Joglo right now.

The view from the small, but neat premises overlooks the Naalya valley.
The wrong side, east, so you don’t see the sun set in the evenings, but you do see the lights and that is a view in itself.

While you gaze at the hills lapse into the night, waiting in the back are some of the friendliest staff I have ever met.
I don’t mean they hover about irritating you, I mean properly friendly.

I suspected at first that it was because we were there on invitation and they were putting on their best show for the journalist’s party, but from what other people have told me about Joglo, they really are that good.

Joseph, the part owner and the “jo” in Joglo (The “glo” is his wife Gloria) was even on deck mixing with the customers, cracking jokes and handing roses to couples.

And I haven’t even started on the food. We had pork, because one does on a Sunday afternoon. We had two skewers and two servings of ribs. Juicy and large and awesomely done that cost us about sh21,000 minus drinks.

And now, I am getting embarrassed at how much praise I am lavishing on this place, so let me stop here. Highly recommended.
