IT is viable to create and run new districts, the Minister for the Presidency, Beatrice Wabudeya, has said. Speaking during celebrations to mark the 47th independence anniversary at Bukedea district headquarters on Sunday, Wabudeya said it was easy to fight corruption in small districts.

“I support the President in creating small districts. We can use Bukedea as an example of how successful small districts can be.”

Wabudeya argued that counties demanding district status should be given a chance to shape their own destiny. “Bukedea and Sironko should support the creation of Serere district out of Soroti and Ngora out of Kumi so that they can also propel themselves to prosperity.”

She said new districts enable local people determine better how to be governed. President Yoweri Museveni has advocated the creation of new districts, saying it is a way of taking services closer to the people.

But members of the opposition say new districts are not viable and are a burden to the taxpayers. Uganda has more than 80 districts.
