THE private sector should be involved in economic policy discussions before policies are formulated, the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) has said.

They added that it was vital for the private sector to be consulted on policy formulation to avoid hurting their investments.

“It is unfair for the Government to ignore manufacturers in such discussions and eventually impose on us policies that cannot be easily implemented,” Kaddu Kiberu, the UMA chairman, said.

The outcry follows a ban on polythene bags (kaveera) in the 2009/10 budget proposals, which becomes effective in January, 2010.

Kiberu said the ban was not well thought out since 70-80% of imports to Uganda came packed in polythene bags.

The kaveera ban will become effective next year.
