THE head of the African Union (AU) citizen and diaspora directorate, Jamni Adisa, has warned of human trafficking in Uganda.

“In Africa, human trafficking has mostly affected countries south of the Sahara and Uganda should be on the stand-by for possible traffickers taking advantage of the unfavourable global economic situation,” Adisa warned.

He made the warning while closing the three-day AU pre-summit organised by the Pan African Movement at the Imperial Royale hotel on Thursday.

“With the AU summit coming to Uganda, the Government should take advantage and be the first to implement the convention that protects refugees, returnees and internally displaced people once it is adopted,” Adisa added.

The organisation contends that the annual global human trafficking is the third-most lucrative criminal activity after the narcotics and weapons trades.
The International Labour Organisation estimates 2.5 million people are trafficked and subjected to sexual or labour exploitation annually.

The US Trafficking in Persons 2009 report identified South Africa as a source, transit and destination for trafficked persons from Rwanda, the DR Congo, Somalia, Eritrea, Zimbabwe and Mozambique due to socio-economic and political problems there.
