THE failure to professionalise the national cricket association led to the termination of Muhumuza Mpeka’s contract as chief executive officer.

According to the Uganda Cricket Association chairman Kato Sebbaale, as part of his mandate Mpeka was required to professionalise the administration of the local game, and was expected to start with the office manpower by setting them targets and job references. Sebbaale said the official failed in this task in his first two months of probation.

Mpeka was recruited and started work on August 1 but was sacked last week.

“The first thing we expected him to do was to set targets for the employees and give them job references. He had spent over two months in the office and he had not done anything about this. If he failed in the start, how could he professionalise the entire game?” Ssebaale wondered.

Mpeka will get his salary of sh5m for this month and next month according to Latimer Mukasa, the body’s public relations officer.

Sources said that Mpeka accused the association for not giving him a car and an office. But the executive says he has been drawing money for fuel allowances and had a desk for his work.

His sacking has however divided the executive. An e-mail was circulated accusing treasurer George Zaribwende of withdrawing over $30,000 from the association account.

“That rumour has been around but our auditors explained everything. We will be having a council meeting on Sunday to explain everything,” Sebbaale explained.
