THE NRM party is determined to win back all seats from the opposition in Hoima Municipality in the 2011 polls, agriculture state minister Hope Mwesigye has said. Mwesigye asked Hoima mayor Francis Atugonza, who is the national secretary for trade and industry in the FDC party, to return to the NRM if he wants to retain his seat.

“Hoima should get back to the NRM. It is up to you Atugonza to quit the opposition or lose your seat,” Mwesigye said. Citing the former FDC national chairperson, John Butiime, who returned to the NRM recently, Mwesigye said: “Look at Butiime who has returned to the Movement and many other people in regions like Teso. You also need to come back and work with us.”

Mwesigye was closing a three-day exhibition organised by Hoima Caritas Development Organisation at the Booma Grounds in Hoima town on Saturday.

She made the remarks after Atugonza complained that three members of his council executive had resigned on the orders of the NRM secretary general, Amama Mbabazi.

Atugonza said during the NRM district delegates’ conference two weeks ago, Mbabazi told the councillors that it was against the NRM party constitution to sit on an executive council, which is headed by the opposition.

He also said the Banyoro were against the President’s proposal of ring-fencing some political positions in Bunyoro, in a bid to resolve the land and political disputes between the indigenous Banyoro and Bakiiga migrants.
