Otafiire should be sensible over the deadly waragi

EDITOR—Two ministers have clashed in Parliament over how to deal with local gin (waragi) packed in sachets, cited as the cause of over 50 deaths across the country. Whereas health state minister Richard Nduhura told the joint committees of social services and industry that selling waragi was banned following the deaths, trade minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, said there was no such prohibition! With due respect, Otafiire ought to apply his common sense and understand the following: So many people have lost lives after taking the very same waragi packed in sachets. Is it fair for him to be seen to be supporting the continued sale of this poison? Must we continue losing lives through the sale of this poison? Is waragi so essential in this country that Ugandans cannot do without it? Is waragi the only commodity Otafiire’s ‘investors’ can trade in?

How many more Ugandans does Otafiire want dead before he can realise the waragi ought to be banned?

Does he know of any person who has died after taking waragi properly packed in Uganda Waragi bottles to justify his argument that the problem is not packaging? Why it is only waragi packed in sachets and not bottles that is killing Ugandans? Nduhuura, on behalf of the people of Igara East, should go on and ban this killer waragi. We support him and he also has the support from the LC5 chairman of Gulu district, Norbert Mao. Otafiire can take his killer waragi to Ruhinda if he is happy with the deaths it is causing.
