Equity Bank employee arrested over sh86m theft

THE Equity Bank loans administrator, John Lukanga, has been arrested over the theft of sh86m from the bank’s Lyantonde branch.

THE Equity Bank loans administrator, John Lukanga, has been arrested over the theft of sh86m from the bank’s Lyantonde branch.

The southern regional criminal investigations chief, Willy Panuha, said the Police recovered sh59m from Lukanga’s home in Kampala.

The other bank staff, who had been arrested in connection with the theft, were released on Police bond last Friday.

Those released included Harriet Birungi, a cashier, Dorothy Nanziri, a banking assistant and Kenneth Muhwezi, a credit officer.

The bank manager, Patrick Kalema, said he discovered the theft on November 21, adding that shortly after, Lukanga went missing from the bank.

The Police said investigations are ongoing.
