GOVERNMENT has given full backing for the World Boxing Federation heavyweight title fight between champion Francois Botha, from South Africa and Evander Holyfield.

The fight is due on January 16 next year at Namboole’s Mandela National Stadium.

At a press conference at Hotel Africana on Tuesday, army spokesman Felix Kulayigye and minister for information Kabakumba Matsiko said government will fully back the event. It is the first time that Uganda is hosting a boxing fight of that magnitude.

“UPDF feel proud of this event and we can assure all the participants in this fight that they will get maximum security,” Kulayigye said.

The fight is promoted by Baltic Pro Box Promotions.

“This is a New Year’s gift for Uganda and the government is going to give you total support,” Matsiko assured the organisers. “We have to give support and help to our local investors like Baltic ProBox.”
