Eye contact vs trust
- Christine Bako (FDC) recently amused a high profile gathering of professionals when she charged that there is a lot of mistrust among the East African Community presidents. She said: “Look at them closely when they meet and shake hands one of these days. None of them can dare look into the other’s eyes.” Oh Bako, is eye-contact the best measurement for mistrust?

Diplomatic Mpanga
- David Mpanga, a youthful prominent Kampala lawyer and also the Mengo minister for research, invited his mother Joyce Mpanga, to chair a session at the Buganda conference.
This caused him some guilt to which he diplomatically commented: “I hope you won’t take it as nepotism,” to the amusement of participants. Mpanga’s woes were not yet over. Because of limited time, he cut short his mother’s session saying: “You have done a wonderful job, but we are eating into the next session. Thank you very much.” How diplomatic.

Smart Kanyeihamba
- After making a long and impressive presentation on the ‘strength of diversity in constitutional governance’ at a conference recently, retired Judge Prof. Kanyeihamba, said copies of his paper would be availed to participants. However on realising that the paper had to be sold to recover the cost of photocopying it, the smart Judge immediately altered his statement, saying: “I said I am not getting anything in presenting this paper but participants must pay some little money to help Buganda Kingdom.”

Politics’ gentle art
- Gulu district chairman, Nobert Mao, describes politics as the gentle art of getting support from perceived rival groups. To support his argument, he narrated how UPC leaders in Gulu convinced the people not to vote for Paul Ssemwogerere because he would force them to carry bricks and stones to rebuild the Mengo palace which was ransacked in 1966. True, politics can be made dirty by dirty-minded people as it is all about divide and rule.
