DISTRICT leaders should gazette industrial areas, President Yoweri Museveni has advised.

“You need to mark areas that can be used as industrial parks and also establish land banks because we have a lot of investors who are looking for land,” Museveni told Sheema North leaders in a speech read by trade and industry state minister, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, at Mushanga Catholic Social Centre in Bushenyi.

The president said industrialisation was the only way to solve unemployment, which is affecting the country because of its ever- increasing population.

Kamuntu said the President had written to the ministries of finance and industry to address the issue of transforming societies from peasantry and subsistence lifestyle to a monetary and prosperous lifestyle.

He said more than 68% of Uganda’s households are peasants.

Kamuntu said the Government was looking at ways of reviving Banyankole Kweterana Cooperative Society.
“I have been with minister Salim Saleh meeting farmers to see how we can revive Banyankole Kweterana,” he said at the workshop, which was organised by the area Member of Parliament, Elioda Tumwesigye.

The workshop’s theme was: “To plan for 2008, income generation and job- creation for our people.”

Tumwesigye said people are poor so it is the responsibility of leaders to devise ways of assisting them.

He said the population was growing and yet there is no land to meet the population’s demands.

“Unless we address issues that concern the public, we are in problems,” Tumwesigye said.

The district chairman Longino Ndyanabo appealed to leaders to be practical in whatever they are doing.
